The Northern Beacon

Welcome to "The Northern Beacon" (beta-version)!

This is the 1st edition of an enormous collection of Long-and  Medium Frequency Beacons monitored in Norway.

History

Since the start of serious AM listening in the 60s, a lot of Radio Beacons have been noted in the LW and MW bands.

It was, however, not until the 80s, that we really sat down and made efforts to identify the hundreds of signals heard. We were fascinated by the low power behind the signals and the large distances they travelled. So, in 1986, Kjell Arne produced the first log list, followed by new ones in for the 1987 and 1988 seasons.

He had then already produced a bulletin called "Fyrvokteren", ("The Beaconian") for some time, this was later changed to "The Northern Beacon".

Regrettably, all computer data was later lost, so we had to scan all the lists that had been made, and try to edit them once again. That is why these lists appear so late. But better late than never, we think.

The basic re-listing of material and finishing work has been done by Svenn, together with a great deal of research.

Special credit must be given to Geir Stokkeland, nowadays the MD of Radio VLR Vestnes-Molde, a radio "sparks", ham and DXer, who really was the teacher of several beacon DXers, during these years.

Use of data

The Northern Beacon is freeware, but please note:

The data may be used for historical reference, but might also be used as platform for your own country lists, personal log lists, and lists of several types. Any new lists produced from this product, have to be authorised by the editors of The Northern Beacon before work can start. You are however, without further notice, authorised to make changes in the listings, by correcting them, or adding information to them.

The editors would be glad to be notified of important corrections and additions to Svenn Martinsen.
