Contest rules

1. CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

The 1997 Nordic DX Championships is open to all DXers based in Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Iceland or Norway during the contest period. The following individuals are members of the organizing committee and may not take part in the competition: Olav Nordli, Jan Alvestad, Bernt Erfjord, Svein Olav Pedersen, Arild Skalmeraas, Ole Forr. All other DXLC members are at liberty to compete.

The organizers cannot guarantee that contestants who have submitted their registration fees after the September 30 deadline will receive their contest schedules in time. Registrations are accepted after this date, but no refunds will be available should the schedule not arrive in time.

You may register after the contest weekend by snail-mailing us the special registration form together with your contest logs and your payment, postmarked no later than October 27th.

Non-Nordic DXers will be ranked separately and will not be in the running for the main prizes. All non-Nordic participants will, however, receive a small memento from Nordx’97, and will of course receive all special QSLs.

2. CONTEST LOGS

English is the official language of the contest, and contest logs must be written in English only. All logs shall be written on standard A4-size paper. They shall be written on separate sheets for each station, and on one side of the paper only.

Do NOT write your name on the log sheets. If you register after the contest weekend, please write "late entrant" in the upper, right-hand corner of each sheet. It is important that you put the registration form in the envelope together with the logs!

Each contest log should contain the name and frequency of the station in question, time in UTC (accurate to within 60 seconds) and programme details (cf. § 5) in chronological order. Please refer to the adjacent sample log.

Logs should be typewritten if at all possible. The organizers reserve the right to disqualify contestants who submit logs which are unintelligeble or otherwise not in compliance with the above rules.

All logs should be postmarked no later than October 27, and mailed to: Nordx’97, P.O.Box 7080 Vestheiene, N-4602 KRISTIANSAND, Norway.

All logs must be submitted on sheets of paper as stipulated above, and may NOT be submitted by e-mail. However, contestants able to do so are encouraged by the organizers to include a computer disk with their logs. The format should be Word 6.0 or any other format which is easily converted into such. Logs should be stored as one document, with a separate page for each station. Computer disks will be returned after the contest.

3. CLASSIFICATION

Contestants will be ranked according to the total number of station points (cf. point 4) achieved. If two or more contestants have acquired the same number of station points, they shall be ranked according to the total number of programme points (cf. § 5).

The club contest is based on the three members of each club who have achieved the best results in the individual contest. The nation contest is based on the five contestants of each country who have achieved the best results in the individual contest.

The score for each club/nation is calculated by adding up the individual classifications of the contestants above. The club/country with the lowest score has won.

4. STATION POINTS

Each station heard in the contest shall equal a certain number of station points. This will depend on the amount of contestants having heard that particular station. Thus, the number of station points awarded for each station is calculated using the following formula:

101 less the percentage of contestants who have heard the station = number of station points. No fractions of points will be used. Fractions lower than 0.5 will be rounded down, 0.5 and more will be rounded up.

E.g. if only 1 percent of the contestants have heard a certain station, the number of station points will be 100. If everybody has heard the station, the number of station points will be 1.

In order to obtain station points for a specific station, at least one reported programme detail has to be judged correct, alternatively a close description of the programme (cf. § 5).

5. PROGRAMME POINTS

One programme point shall be awarded for each programme detail which is judged to be correct by the organizing committee. Only the following will be accepted as correct programme details:

  • announced or unannounced music of at least 30 seconds duration which is identified by title, artist or composer. One point for each piece of music.
  • commercials which are identified by name of product, name of company or type of product advertised. One point for each commercial.
  • presenters or persons interviewed who are identified by name or title. One point for each person.
  • spoken features of minimum 60 seconds duration, the content/subject of which is adequately summarized.

If a contestant has heard a station but is unable to supply any programme details according to the specifications above, he or she may instead supply a description detailling the broadcast as scrupullously as possible. If, in this way, the organizing committee is convinced that the contestant has heard the station, he or she will be awarded the appropriate amount of station points (but of course, no programme points). The organizing committee’s decision in this matter will be final.

6. COOPERATION

There shall be no cooperation between contestants. Any cooperation may lead to disqualification of all parties involved.

7. DELETIONS

Stations may be deleted from the contest for any of the following reasons:

- the station has not broadcast within +/- 10 kHz of any of the frequencies stated in the contest schedule.

- the station has informed contestants of programme contents. (This may include material made available by the station to the general public through the Internet.)

- the inclusion of the station has unfairly favoured contestants in one particular area. The organizing committees decision in such matters will be final.

- the organizing committee has been unable to obtain sufficient information about the programme broadcast.

8. PROTESTS

Anyone wishing to lodge protests concerning the contest schedule, may do so on a separate sheet of paper when mailing the contest log.

The organizers urge all contestants to make comments about the way Nordx’97 has been organized. Such comments will be of value to organizers of future events.

9. PRIZES

All customs fees, taxes or levies incurred on prizes won in this contest, is not the responsibility of the organizers or the firms which have donated prizes. Prizes and verifications will only be mailed to contestants after the deadline for lodging protests has expired.

10. VERIFICATIONS

Special QSL-cards or verifications may be issued for some of the broadcasts during Nordx’97. All contestants which are awarded station points for these stations, will receive these special verifications. Special broadcasts or stations cooperating with us on special verifications will be advertised in advance.

Anyone not taking part in the championships may obtain these verifications by supplying 2 IRCs along with their reception report, mailed to Nordx’97.

In case of the remaining stations included in the contest schedule, reports will not be forwarded. However, we urge you to get in touch with as many stations as possible, informing them that they have been part of the Nordic DX Championships.
