There was a huge sporadic E opening on May 24 towards Spain, France and North Africa. It lasted for several hours and should have rewarded several of FMN’s subscribers with interesting and large logs. If you have any log from this particular opening or others that surely will occur by next deadline, I’m certain others would like to see them. If you are sending logs to Internet mail lists, please remember to cc to janalv@robin.no.

Lithuania

New station is on the air in Vilnius on 96.4 MHz with 1 kW of transmitter output power. Height of antenna is 44 meters above ground level. Program is named A2 (pronounced "ah du") and is broadcast 24h/day.

Norway

For some time listeners in Oslo will be able to hear test transmissions from a synchronized FM network. Normally two transmitters using the same frequency locally will result in chaos. A company in the USA has produced a synchronizing system to make possible what was previously impossible. The equipment digitally controls the transmitters and performs a very precise synchronization of frequency and timing. Radio 1 Norge in cooperation with the supplier Siving. Benum as has setup two transmitters in Oslo on 95.1.

SynchroCast with the possibilities for several synchronized transmitters on the same frequency will improve the reception quality and area significantly compared to what is achieved with one transmitter only. Outside of the advantage of "saving" frequencies as compared to a usual network of several transmitters, an example of a benefit would be that people don’t have to change frequencies when in their cars.

SynchroCast uses reference data from GPS (Global Positioning System) and is a new system. Currently there are no more than 6 such systems used in the USA. (BE)
